How Much Breast Milk Does a Baby Need?

Between 1–6 months, most babies need about 22–28 oz (650–830 mL) of breast milk per day. This stays relatively stable even as your baby grows — unlike formula, breast milk changes composition to meet your baby's needs.

A simple rule of thumb from the AAP: babies need approximately 2.0–2.8 oz of breast milk per pound of body weight per day, up to a maximum of about 32 oz (950 mL). But remember — every baby is different, and these are estimates, not targets.

Once solids are introduced around 6 months, breast milk intake gradually decreases as food becomes a larger part of your baby's diet.
